We cross-referenced budget, annual mileage, and access to home charging to determine when an electric SUV will pay for itself compared to a hybrid in 2026. Analysis by price range with models available for sale in Spain.

The fundamental question in 2026 is no longer technological. It's economic. A 2026 electric or hybrid SUV will be chosen by looking at your electricity bill, last year's mileage, and whether you have a charging point in your garage—not by reading torque brochures. And yet, many people still buy in reverse: they fall in love with the car first and then try to work out the numbers. Here, we're going to do it in the right order.

From the initial list, we've eliminated two candidates. The BYD Atto 3, which until recently was the benchmark for value in this segment, has lost much of that advantage: the arrival of European and Asian manufacturers with fresher offerings has narrowed the margin that made the brand unbeatable on paper. And the Nissan Qashqai e-Power, which remains a capable car, is excluded because, in our opinion, there are now alternatives that better cover the trio of equipment, technology, and range for a similar price. With that clarified, let's get down to business.

The decision framework: three variables, not one

Before looking at prices, answer this:

  • Actual annual kilometersNot the ones you think you're doing. The ones the odometer is doing.
  • Access to recharge at home or work. Domestic socket, wallbox or zero.
  • Total available budget, including funding and aid.

If you drive less than 8.000 km per year and always charge at public charging stations, an electric car rarely pays for itself compared to a good hybrid. If you drive over 20.000 km annually and have a wallbox, the calculations change dramatically. Most Spanish drivers fall somewhere in between, and that's where the decision becomes interesting.

Tier 1: up to €30.000 — the hybrid almost always wins

With this budget, an electric car means sacrificing useful range or size. A well-chosen self-charging hybrid offers 5,0-5,5 l/100 km in real-world driving and zero fuel anxiety. If you don't have a home charging station, don't even consider it.

MG ZS Hybrid+ (from €22.500)

The hybrid B-segment SUV that has revolutionized the segment with its price. While not a dynamic marvel, it delivers: reasonable fuel consumption, a long warranty, and an ECO label. For a typical urban/mixed-use driver covering 12.000 km per year, it's hard to beat in terms of cost per kilometer. However, the interior feels a step below a Toyota.

Toyota RAV4 Hybrid (from €38.500)

It's priced outside the typical range, but it deserves mention because it sets the bar for self-charging hybrids: proven reliability, a real-world fuel consumption of 5,4 l/100 km without any effort, and a three-year resale value that very few rivals can match. This is the critical segment. A decent electric SUV enters the picture, and a well-equipped hybrid as well. The answer depends on the intended use.

Hyundai Tucson Hybrid (from €32.900)

A benchmark in its segment for equipment and finish. 5,8 l/100 km in real-world driving, an ECO label, and interior space that many similarly priced electric vehicles don't offer. For drivers without their own garage, it's the sensible choice.

The Asian PHEV has arrived with a hunger: 90 km of certified electric range, a zero-emissions label, and generous equipment. For those who can charge at home and cover their daily 40-50 km in pure electric mode, the real savings are significant. The questionable part is what's left when the battery runs out: fuel consumption in combustion mode isn't its strong suit.

Renault Scenic E-Tech (from €41.500)

A true electric family car, with a WLTP range of 625 km in the larger version and a premium-feeling interior. Real-world fuel consumption is reasonable for its segment.

When does the electric vehicle pay for itself: the numbers in hand

With off-peak electricity rates (approximately €0,10/kWh) and gasoline at €1,55/l, an electric vehicle costs around €1,60 per 100 km compared to €8,50 for a hybrid. That's a difference of almost €7 per 100 km. Based on 15.000 km per year, this translates to savings of over €1.000 annually in energy costs alone. Add to that maintenance savings (no oil changes, brakes that last twice as long thanks to regenerative braking) and the tax advantages of the ZERO emissions label in low-emission zones.

On paper, the €6.000-€8.000 price difference between an electric car and its equivalent hybrid is recouped in 4-5 years if you drive 15.000 km. If you drive 25.000 km, it's recouped in three years. If you drive 8.000 km and charge at public stations at €0,45/kWh, you'll never recoup it.
