This is the new IONIQ 5: Hyundai's new generation electric car

As expected, the Korean manufacturer has just officially presented its first vehicle developed from scratch to be completely electricHyundai has been selling some electric models for years, but all of them have also been available with other propulsion systems.

The new IONIQ 5 represents a turning point for the company, a statement with which Hyundai wants to demonstrate everything it is capable of offering in the world of electric mobility. And that is no small feat, since the new Korean electric car is ahead of many of its direct competitors in multiple areas.

Starting with its design, the IONIQ 5 has a modern and at the same time elegant air. A breath of fresh air in a market where models from different manufacturers tend to look too similar. The Korean electric car follows its own path and is different from the rest.

Based on the Concept 45, presented at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show, with this prototype the Korean manufacturer wanted to pay tribute to one of its most iconic models, the 1974 Hyundai Pony CoupeThe company believes the Pony laid the groundwork for what Hyundai is today, and where it wants to be in the industry going forward.

Electric from start to finish

With the IONIQ 5, Hyundai launches its New E-GMP platform developed exclusively for electric vehicles, and which in the near future will also be used by other models of the brand. The new Hyundai electric car is, however, difficult to classify. In this case, it is not just another SUV, probably staying halfway between a CUV and a hatchback.

Hyundai will offer three different versions of the IONIQ 5, depending on the battery capacity and the type of drive. The version with standard autonomy will be equipped with a XNUMX mAh battery. 58 kWh and a single engine on the rear axle. It will also be possible to opt for another version with extended autonomy that will be equipped a larger battery with a capacity of 72.6 kWhThis version will also be available with both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive, with an electric motor on each axle in the latter case.

The Korean manufacturer claims that the autonomy of IONIQ 5, under the WLTP homologation cycle, will be around 480 km. In this case we are talking about the version with extended autonomy, since Hyundai has not given any specific autonomy figures for the standard version. In any case, using a simple rule of three we can expect around 380 km for this version.

Unrivaled at the charging point

Although it is true that Hyundai's new electric car does not stand out from the competition in terms of autonomy, what it does do with flying colours is its battery charge. The IONIQ 5 is compatible with ultra-fast charging points at both 400V and 800V. Also being able to support a charging power of up to 350 kW, outperforming any other electric car currently available on the market. The closest to it is the Porsche Taycan with up to 270 kW supported, but with a final price up to five times higher.

Hyundai claims the IONIQ 5 is capable of Increase your range by 100 km in just 5 minutes, or charge its battery from 10 to 80 percent in less than 20 minutes. In other words, you hardly even have time to have a cup of coffee in the meantime.

The Korean electric car will also take the use of the energy stored in its battery to another level with the V2L technology, vehicle-to-load. Using an adapter on the external charging connector, it will be possible to connect any household appliance or electronic device as if it were a household socket. The IONIQ 5 will also have a Schuko power socket inside the vehicle.

Hyundai says the IONIQ 5 will arrive in some markets during the first half of this year, although we shouldn't expect it to arrive in Europe until after the summer. Its price should start at 40 thousand euros. A price that, taking into account everything it offers, places it as one of the most interesting options on the market without a doubt.
