Audi is already planning a replacement for its R8 supercar… and it will be electric

The facelift of the current Audi R8 could be much more radical than many expect, as it would use a fully electric propulsion system

Audi could already be planning to revamp its R8 supercar, or at least that is what the British media claims CarMagazine. A news that would be the most normal, if it were not for the fact that this medium claims that Its successor will be fully electric.

The German firm would apparently be seeking the collaboration of Rimac to make this project possible, and would have already decided on the name of its future electric supercar, the plant where it will be manufactured and the date on which its production will begin.

According to some sources within the company itself, the name chosen for the successor of the R8 would be Audi RS e-tron, and will be manufactured at the Böllinger Höfe plant in Heilbronn. Production is scheduled to start in 2023 - provided everything goes according to plan - although there is a possibility that it will be delayed until 2024.

The RS e-tron will share a production plant with the e-tron GT

Incidentally, the Audi R8 with combustion engine is already being produced at this plant. The RS e-tron will not, however, be the first electric car to come out of the Böllinger Höfe plant. The e-tron GT will do it first, whose production is scheduled to begin in late 2020.

The Audi RS e-tron, which as we say will integrate Rimac technology, will have four engines with a total power of around 700 kWIts acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h will be no less surprising, standing at around 2.5 seconds. Crazy!

Its solid-state battery will presumably be 95 kWh and will allow it to travel around 480 km on a single charge. The innovations regarding the battery will not end there, however, as sources in Ingolstadt claim that the RS e-tron It will also have wireless charging.

The PB 18 prototype paved the way for the R8's replacement

Many of these data will surely remind you of those already known indicated at the presentation of the Audi PB 18 e-tron concept car exactly one year ago. And it is not surprising, since it seems that the RS e-tron will not only borrow some of its technical specifications, but will also use some of its design elements.

The details revealed about Audi's future electric supercar do not end here and also refer to its price, which is expected to be slightly below 200 thousand euros.
