BMW is considering keeping production of the electric MINI in England

German media are currently reporting BMW's interest in producing electric vehicles of its MINI brand in England. However, this decision will not be final until the end of this year.

Some information published in recent months suggested precisely the opposite, that MINI to stop producing electric models in Oxford from 2023 and production would be moved to China. This information was based on the fact that the English plant does not have the necessary equipment to produce this type of vehicle on a large scale and would require a significant investment to renew it.

However, everything now points to the fact that BMW is considering remodelling its Oxford plantThe reason that would now lead the Bavarian firm to take this decision is that, apparently, its plant in China and the one in Leipzig - where the electric MINI Countryman will be produced - are not sufficient to meet the expected high demand. Therefore, the company considers that the best solution is to adapt the English plant for the production of electric MINI models there as well.

New MINI electric cars will not be produced in Oxford unless the plant is renovated

German media claim that BMW's Oxford plant has recently produced 40 thousand units of the electric MINI Cooper SE and another 140 units of other MINI models with combustion engines. The production of the electric MINI Cooper SE has been possible in Oxford, they explain, because this electric car has been developed on the basis of a combustion model. Something that will not be possible with the brand's next electric models.

It is not yet known, however, to what level BMW could take the work of adapting the Oxford plant. The Bavarian firm It usually relies on flexible production lines, which assembles both fully electric and combustion engine models. The company believes that this makes it easier to adapt production to the changing demand that exists at any given time.

Recently, Nicolai Peter, BMW's Chief Financial Officer, expressed his commitment that Oxford remains the main MINI plantHowever, it is not clear whether this statement was not limited to the brand's models with combustion engines, or on the contrary it also referred to the production of electric vehicles.

In any case, we will know BMW's final decision in the coming weeks.
