The Renault Scénic is back with an electric propulsion system

The French manufacturer plans to reintroduce the popular Scénic to the market, although this time with some significant changes compared to the previous model. Firstly, it will feature a fully electric powertrain , and secondly, it won't be a compact MPV as one might expect, but rather a five-passenger SUV.

This is at least what British media outlets are reporting, based on sources close to the company. The Scénic E-Tech , which is likely what it will be called, will use the CMF-EV platform developed by the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance for its electric models. The first vehicle to incorporate this platform is precisely the Megane E-Tech.

The new Scénic E-Tech will be positioned precisely one step above the Megane electric in the Renault range. To give you an idea, while the latter will have to compete directly with the Volkswagen ID.3, the Scénic E-Tech will have to compete with the ID.4 and other similar SUVs from other manufacturers that are around 4.75 metres long.

Everything points to the French manufacturer unveiling this new electric model around May of this year, with the intention of launching it in 2024. The Renault brand will likely use its annual conference to introduce this new electric model to the world.

Scénic: a name with a lot of weight in Renault's history

Renault first launched the Scénic in 1996 as a more spacious version of the Megane. In its second generation, from 2003, it became a completely independent model within the French manufacturer's range of vehicles. Renault currently sells a larger version - the Grand Scénic - with space for seven occupants.

Finally, it's worth noting that this won't be the first time the French firm has "recycled" the name of one of its models for a new vehicle in a different segment. This already happened, for example, with the Espace . Four generations of this model were on sale for thirty years, from 1984 to 2014, and were a generously sized minivan. However, with the fifth generation, which arrived in 2015, Renault completely reinvented the Espace, transforming it into a crossover.
